What is the Puerto Rico MPO?
The Puerto Rico Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a transportation
policy board comprised of voting members including representatives from
Commonwealth transportation agencies and island municipalities.
The MPO is responsible for transportation planning and funding allocation in
Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico MPO works with the public, planning organizations,
government agencies, elected officials, and community groups to develop
transportation plans.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works and the Puerto Rico Highway
and Transportation Authority are the operational arm of the Puerto Rico MPO
The Puerto Rico MPO's Vision and Mission
The Puerto Rico MPO's vision is to transform transportation on the island to
achieve optimum mobility while promoting economic vitality, protecting the
environment, and enhancing quality of life. The mission of the Puerto Rico MPO is
to guide the expenditure of federal and commonwealth transportation funds to
provide an effective island wide transportation system that ensures the safe and
efficient mobility of people and goods optimizes mobility choices, and enhances
the environmental and economic well-being.
2040 Long Range Transportation Plan:
A major project of the MPO is the 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan which will
set transportation priorities for the island to the year 2040.
